COCONUT GROVE, florida

An incredible setting - the botanical gardens, concrete and whitewashed brick structures with plants spilling over - allowed the featured florals be more modest and standing out because of it. Held during the winter solstice with a modern, simple triangle arch set above a classic Moroccan carpet. All of this beneath an ancient tree dripping with spanish moss. For the floral arch installation, I wanted it to feel organic and in harmony with the setting so a base of Smilax Vines, Plumosa ferns and touches of blooms made the space feel like it was already there when we walked up.

To make the flowers stand out among such lush Florida greenery, I utilized creams, whites and touches of mauve autumnal oranges and strong splashes of deep, vibrant red. Their reception was a minimal aesthetic to leave room for people to feel close, so I utilized ikebana theory to make the arrangements have movement, balance and harmony. Utilizing cut stems leaves and flowers, I worked with their minimalist vision to have simple centerpieces or ikebana duo’s on round tables. On larger tables, I made a small centerpiece and 4 satellite ikebana pieces balanced with pillar candles.

Working with Michelle and Christian was an incredible experience. They laid out their vision, their story and their goals. Then, they passed the reins on to me. Within the incredible venue and it's competitive greenery, we were able to create a classic, minimalist feel and even build out the tablescape design on a tight budget. It was an experience that pushed the boundaries of what was considered traditional floral design. The result was something unforgettable.
